The following procedure works on Microsoft Windows XP. For 2000/NT, the
process is similar.
Check to see if the SNMP agent is installed
Open Control Panel --> Performance & Maintenance --> Administrative Tools --> Services
Scroll down the list of services and look for the entry: SNMP Service.
If this entry is present, goto 3, below; otherwise goto 2.
Install the SNMP Agent
Open Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs --> Add/Remove Windows
Components --> Management and Monitoring Tools
Click on the Details button and make sure that
the Simple Network Management Protocol entry is selected.
Click OK then click Next.
At this point you will be asked to insert the Windows Install CD. Follow
the instructions on the screen to complete the installation of this optional
network component.
Configure the SNMP Agent
Start as in 1, above. At this point,
you should see the SNMP Service entry on the
list of installed services.
Right-click on SNMP Service and select Properties.
Click on the Agent tab.
Enter Contact and Location information.
Click the Security tab.
In the Accepted Community Names area,
click the Add button. Choose the option:
accept SNMP packets from any host.
You may want to change this later.
Click on the General tab and select
Start to start the SNMP service (if it's not started already).
