APPLICATION INSTALLATION MANUAL

For Windows XP Workstations

Notes:

Do all installations logged in as Local Administrator.
Use default installation unless specified with other method.
Reboot machine after each installation even the software doesn’t require so.

1. Internet Explorer 6.0:

Notes: IE installs as part of the windows OS. You can update it to the latest version when you do the “windows update.”

Installation instruction:

Open one ID browser
Click Tools -> Windows Update
Follow the instructions as prompted (answer “yes” for installing v4 from Microsoft)

I recommend that you install all the critical patches. For recommended patch, pick those for applications already installed on your system.

2. Netscape 7.1:

Notes: Download Windows (full version) executable.

Installation instruction:

Double click the *.exe to install and follow the instructions as prompted.

3. Microsoft Office 2003:

Notes: If you are majored in Computer Science Department, you can get some of the Microsoft software free. Check the instruction on this page: http://www.sjsucsclub.com/software/.

Installation instruction:

Run setup.exe from CD and follow the instructions as prompted. You can add functions later when you need.
Apply SP1 after installing.

In our lab, we use custom install with following options:

MS Access

Run all from my computer
Then change ".Net Programmablity Support" (Installed on First Use)

MS Excel

Take default
Add "Spreadsheet Templates" (Run all from my computer)
Add "Add-ins" (Run all from my computer)

MS PowerPoint

Take default
Add "Design Templates" (Run all from my computer)
Add "Content Templates" (Run all from my computer)

MS Publisher

Take default
Add "Paperdirect Previews" (Run all from my computer)
Add "Wizards" (Run all from my computer)

MS Word

Run all from my computer
Then change ".Net Programmablity Support" (Installed on First Use)

MS InfoPath

Take default

Shared Features

Take Default
Add "Converters and Filters" (Run all from my computer)

Add "Fonts" (Run all from my computer)
Remove "Office Assistant" (Not Installed)

Add "Web Components" (Run all from my computer)
Add "Themes" (Run all from my computer)

Office tools

Take Default

Add "Equation Editor" (Run all from my computer)
            Add "HTML Source Editing" (Run all from my computer)
          Add "Language Setting Tool" (Run all from my computer)
            Remove "Microsoft Graph" (Not Installed)

Remove "Microsoft Office Binder Support" (Not Installed)
Remove "Microsoft Query" (Not Installed)

Apply SP1 after installing

4. JDK 1.5:

Notes: Download J2SE v x.x.x_xx SDK for 32-bit/64-bit for Windows/Linux/Solaris SPARC and 32-bit for Solaris x86. Download J2SE x.x.x Documentation as needed.

Installation instrcuction:

Install J2SDK v x.x.x executable (*.exe) first by double click *.exe and follow the instructions as prompted, choose C:\program files\java\jdk_x.x.x_xx as the install folder
Extract the documents (*.zip) to C:\program files\java\<JDK folder>\docs
Create shortcut for document access by go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs on windows explorer, and right-click on the right column -> new -> shortcut, browse to "C:\Program Files\java\jdkx.x.x_xx\docs\index.html", click next, type in a name, and click finish.
Add the executables to your path by right-click My Computer on your desktop, click Advanced tab, click Environment Variables button, in System Variables window, highlight the line for variable Path, click Edit at the bottom of the window, add “C:\Program Files\java\jdkx.x.x_xx\bin;” at the beginning of the Variable Value box, click ok. Add classpath variable by click New button for System Variables window, put “classpath” in Variable box and “C:\Program Files\java\jdkx.x.x_xx\lib;.” in Variable Value box.

5. Eclipse 3.1:

Notes: Click “Main Eclipse Download Site”, choose the stable 3.1 version from “Latest Release” list, download eclipse-SDK-3.1-win32.zip for Windows 98/ME/2000/XP.

Installation instruction:

Extract the *.zip to c:\program files\Eclipse
Create “eclipse” shortcut in c:\document and setting\all users\start menu\programs folder, by go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs on windows explorer, and right-click on the right column -> new -> shortcut, browse to "C:\Program Files\Eclipse\eclipse.exe”, click next, type in a name, and click finish.
Make the shortcut start from C:\temp by right-click shortcut to eclipse.exe -> property, click Shortcut tab, and change value for Start in box to “C:\temp”.

6. Microsoft Visual Studio .Net 2003:

Notes: If you are majored in Computer Science Department, you can get some of the Microsoft software free. Check the instruction on this page: http://www.sjsucsclub.com/software/.

Installation instruction:

Run setup.exe from CD1 and follow the instructions as prompted. You can add functions later when you need.
In our lab, we use custom install with following options:

Install as a client.

Choose only

· Language Tools

o C++

§ Tools

· MFC Trace

· Error

§ Everything

o C#
Put MSDN first disk in CD_ROM, install documentations

Choose only
· SDK doc

· Visual Studio .Net and .Net framework

7. Oracle 10g Client:

Notes: Download the client program for windows.

Installation instruction:

Run setup.exe form CD
Follow the instructions as prompted
Install “Run-time”

8. PC SPIM:

Notes: Download executable pcspim.zip for Windows 2000.

Installation instruction:

Unzip the installation file to C:\temp
Run C:\temp\Larus\Software\SPIM\PCSpim files\setup.exe
Follow the instructions as prompted

9. DrScheme209:

Notes: Choose “Windows (95 and up) x86” as the platform, and download the executable file.

Installation instruction:

Double click the executable to start installing.
Follow the instructions as prompted.
Answer “ok” to “Create .zo files”.

10. DirectX 9 SDK:

Notes:

Installation instruction:

Run setup.exe from CD and follow the instructions as prompted.

11. BlueJ 1.3.5:

Notes: Download *.exe for windows.

Installation instruction:

Double click *.exe to install and follow the instructions as prompted.

12. Violet:

Notes: Download violet.jar.

Installation instruction:

Move violet.jar to “C:\program files\Violet”
Add a shortcut to “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs” by go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs on windows explorer, and right-click on the right column -> new -> shortcut, browse to "C:\Program Files\Violet\violet.jar", click next, type in a name, and click finish.

13. TextPad 4.7:

Notes: Download the language version you like.

Installation instruction:

Double click *.exe to start installation and follow the instructions as prompted.

14. 7-zip:

Notes: Download the zip file.

Installation instruction:

Double click to unzip the files to “C:\Program Files\7-Zip”
Add a shortcut to “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs” by go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs on windows explorer, and right-click on the right column -> new -> shortcut, browse to "C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7zFM.exe", click next, type in a name, and click finish.

15. SSH:

Notes: Choose a download site (preferable a site in US), and download SSHSecureShellClient-3.2.0.exe.

Installation instruction:

Double click *.exe to start installation and follow the instructions as prompted.

16. Acrobat Reader 7:

Notes: Choose your platform (windows 2000) and connection speed, check to download full version, and download the executable.

Installation instruction:

Double click *.exe to start installation and follow the instructions as prompted.

17. GhostView & GhostScript:

Notes: Install GhostScript prior to GhostView.

Installation instruction:

Double click *.exe to start installation and follow the instructions as prompted.
Make it available for all users.

18. JMF 2.1.1e:

Notes:

Installation instruction:

Double click *.exe to start installation and follow the instructions as prompted.

19. Haskell – Hugs98:

Notes: Download the *.msi file.

Installation instruction:

Double click *.msi to start installation and follow the instructions as prompted.

20. OpenGL files

Notes: Click here to download the zip file.

Installation instruction:

Unzip it to C:\Temp\glut
Put glut.h in your Visual Studio include\gl directory, like in
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio.Net\VC7\Include\GL
Put glut32.lib in your Visual Studio LIB directory, like in
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio.Net\VC7\Lib
Put glut32.dll in your Windows SYSTEM32 directory, like in
C:\WINNT\System32

21. Ada95:

Notes: Pick a download site, and download ginstall.exe, install.scr, unzip.exe, a25win31.zip, a25win95.zip, acaps22c.zip, ad.zip, adatui.zip, adatutor.zip, cs1code.zip, cs2code.zip, djgpp201.zip, gnat3101.zip, gnat3102.zip, gnat3103.zip, gnat3104.zip, and gw_gnat.zip.

Installation instruction:

Double click ginstall.exe to start installation.
Use default source and destination folder.
Only install option 1 and quit.
Add the executables to your path by right-click My Computer on your desktop, click Advanced tab, click Environment Variables button, in System Variables window, highlight the line from variable Path, click Edit at the bottom of the window, add “C:\gnat310\bin;” at the beginning of the Variable Value box, click ok.

22. DJGPP:

Notes: Pick a download site, choose current, then v2, and download bnu2112b.zip, djcrx203.zip, djdevv203.zip, djlsr203.zip, djtst203.zip, and gcc2953b.zip. If you need to read the detail documentation, download readme.1^st.

Installation instruction:

Unzip all zips into C:\DJGPP, the order of unzip doesn’t affect.
Add the executables to your path by right-click My Computer on your desktop, click Advanced tab, click Environment Variables button, in System Variables window, highlight the line for variable Path, click Edit at the bottom of the window, add “C:\DJGPP\bin;” at the beginning of the Variable Value box, click ok. Add DJGPP variable by click New button from System Variables window, put “DJGPP” in Variable box and “C:\DJGPP\DJGPP.ENV” in Variable Value box.

23. SML:

Notes: Download the *.exe file.

Installation instruction:

Double click *.exe to start installation and follow the instructions as prompted.

24. SWI-Prolog:

Notes: From the site, click Download from left column, then download the self-installing executable for SWI-Prolog/XPCE for MS-Windows.

Installation instruction:

Double click *.exe to start installation and follow the instructions as prompted.
