My research is focused on information security, in a broad sense. Recent research projects have included topics related to malware, cryptography, intrusion detection, protocols, networking, and others, as well as various combinations thereof. In addition, I have academic publications or real-world experience in algorithms, distributed and parallel computing, graph theory, speech, epidemiology, simulation, numerical analysis, applied statistics, and discrete mathematics.

Many of my research projects have been collaborative efforts involving people from diverse technical backgrounds. For example, I have worked with medical doctors on problems in epidemiology and my government work (at NSA) often involved engineers, computer scientists, mathematicians, statisticians, and various non-technical people. My industrial experience also included similar collaborations. I enjoy the challenge of working effectively with people of varied backgrounds and strengths and I particularly enjoy working with talented students (at both the graduate and undergraduate level) on original research projects.
