Catalog Course Description:
XML: DTD, Schema, Namespace, XSLT, XPath, Xquery, Encryption, Signature in XML, applications in vertical industries; Semantic Web; RDF, RDFS, Ontology, Inferences; Web services, relevant tools for search, inference, data conversion in XML, Semantic web applications.

Prerequisites: CS 160 or instructor consent.

 (2) Building an Intelligent Web: Thoery and Practice, by Rajendra Akerkar and Pawan Lingras, Jones & Bartlett Publishers, October 2007

Mashups using Google Mashup Tool, Yahoo Pipe, Mircrosoft Popfly

Semantic Web: RDF and RDFS

Information Retrieval, TFIDF, Vector Space Model, Search Engine

Classification, Association and Clustering

Web Mining (Web-Usage Mining, Web-Content Mining and Web-Structure Mining)

Web services (SOAP, WSDL, UDDI, etc)

 

 Learning Objectives:
 

 At the end of this course, you will be able to
 

 -   Understand XML, RSS, Semantic Web and web services
 -   Know the concepts of information retrieval and web mining (Web-Usage Mining, Web-Content Mining and Web-Structure Mining) 
 -   Do a mashup using Google Mashup Tools, Yahoo! Pipe and Microsoft PopFly

Computer Use in this class:

You will be required to have a wireless-network ready laptop computer for use in the class. You will also need to use your own laptop with wireless access to submit your software assignment inside SJSU campus. Your laptop needs to have wireless capability and you need to register a free wireless account at http://www.sjsu.edu/sjsuone/.

Term Project

There will be a group mashup project using Google Mashup Tools, Yahoo! Pipe or Mircrosoft Popfly. Each group consists of two students. The group chooses a topic, writes a term-project report, and gives a 10 minute presentation at the end of the semester during class time.

Exams:

Two Quiz:  1st on March 6; 2nd on May 1st, 2008
Midterm Exam:  April 3, 2008
Final Exam: 
Thursday, May 15, 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM, MH 223

The Quiz is 30 minutes long and will be given in the beginning of the lecture. The Midterm is 1 hour long, and all exams are in-class, closed book and comprehensive.
