Housing

Non-SJSU students participating in the 2009 Summer University will be housed in the Campus Village. This is a new complex of apartments located on the San Jose State campus.

The Campus Area

San Jose State University is located in downtown San Jose.

It is within walking distance of the train station (Caltrain Diridon Station), light rail stops, restaurants, museums, theaters, cafes, and clubs. It is also a short ride by light rail or taxi from the San Jose Airport. A commuter train runs hourly between San Jose and San Francisco, and a commuter bus runs hourly from the campus to Santa Cruz (a resort town on the ocean.)

The Apartments

Each student will have a private bedroom in a four-bedroom apartment. Here's the floor plan:

Note that the beds are all single beds. Sheets and towels will be provided.

Check-In/Check-Out

The rooms will be available starting Saturday, July 11. Occupants must vacate no later than Sunday, August 9.

A specific check-in time will be designated for July 11 to coincide with the arrival of the Swiss participants. Participants arriving at other times should go to the reception desk in Joe West Hall (which is next to the Campus Village). That desk is open from 7 AM to midnight, seven days a week. Participants arriving after midnight should call the receptionist at (408) 795-5604 or use the call box outside of Joe West Hall.

Parking

Participants bringing cars can park them in one of the campus garages. A one week parking permit purchased from the housing office costs $40. A one-day permit purchaseed from the garage only costs $4!

Meals, Laundry, Internet

There is a dining hall in the Campus Village that serves breakfast, lunc, and dinner. (I will check the hours and prices.) There are kitchens in the apartments and small grocery stores near campus, larger ones a bit further, but still within walking distance. (I will get the exact locations and find out if the kitchens are stocked with pots, pans, etc..) Also, there are many inexpenssive restaurants that are nearby (especially if you like mexican or Vietnamese food.)

There are laundry rooms located in the building.

The campus has wireless Internet. Participants will be provided with accounts for the campus' wireless network.

Weather

In July San Jose is hot! (Translation for participants coming from Arizona: "In July San Jose is cool!") Expect temperatures around 28°C / 82°F. However, it can get very cold near the ocean (San Francisco and Santa Cruz) due to the summer fog. For excursions to these places participants should bring something warm. Rain in July is very rare.

Faculty Housing

For faculty participants there are two on-campus options: four-bedroom apartment shown above, or a three bedroom apartment:

3 bedroom floor plan

Note that the bedrooms in the four bedroom apartments are private and cost $70/night/person, while the bedrooms in the three bedroom apartments are shared by two people and therefore only cost $55/night/person. Note also that all beds are single beds with sheets and towels provided.

The prices quoted above are group rates. To date no rooms have been reserved for faculty. Faculty wishing to make their own arrangements can contact the housing office directly:
