Mathematics in Medical Therapies
In the race to develop new treatments for cancer and other devastating diseases, quantitative methods have become indispensable. Mathematical models are used to aid understanding of fundamental disease biology all the way through the development of therapeutic drugs. I will discuss several applications: 1) an investigation of the cell cycle phase when cancer cells should receive a signal to die; 2) the use of mathematical models (and their acceptance by the FDA!) to predict safe and effective drug doses for patients; and 3) the determination of dosing regimens for better patient outcomes. The mathematics ranges from simple systems of ordinary differential equations to control theory applied to complex systems.
