Selected teaching evaluations
Below are selected student comments
extracted (by me, of course)
from my teaching evaluations
at SJSU. The comments are grouped by semester and by course.
If I taught more than one section of a course in a semester,
the comments for the same course are grouped together.
- Fall 2017
- CS 286 Machine Learning
- Excellent knowledge and teaching strategies. Good use of previous student work as practical examples for the applications.
- Dr. Stamp made complex concepts simple. The teaching method is very good.
- Best professor in CS department, learnt the most in his class than any other classes at SJSU. HWs really helped us understand the whole concept. Very practical lessons. I am able to apply my knowledge gained in class in problems overall.
- Prof Stamp is very well versed in what he is teaching and thus presents complex machine learning models in a simple understandable way. He has an excellent sense of humor. Also the professor is very approachable to solve doubts and help with the material.
I always look forward to his classes.
- Either split this subject into 2 classes or shave a subject or two off. Or omit the final project perhaps because the workload demanded from the class far exceeded any other class I've ever taken anywhere.
- This class was almost overwhelming in terms of the amount of time it demanded, certainly for the number of credits it's worth.
- Assignments could be a tad easier.
- You are awesome Prof Stamp.
- In my opinion, Professor Mark Stamp is the biggest asset of the CS department.
He literally gave us everything we needed to do well in this class. Here's what I
liked about the class and the professor:
1) Professor is very understanding of students and their busy schedules
(ex. he dropped the hardest questions from HW and even extended our deadlines
during midterms / finals seasons)
2) Textbook is very informative with lots of examples and challenging questions
(plus he wrote the book)
3) Lecture videos are posted online, which gives us a chance to take our
time & look back at any part we need clarification on.
4) Partner quizzes are the best invention ever - this was the first class
(in my life) where I got to take a quiz with a partner and I honestly felt this
method is super effective because it keeps the students engaged, talking with
one another and I always felt that I learned something afterwards (compared to
taking a quiz myself)
5) Professor is clearly very knowledgeable in this field so he was always able
to clarify our questions in a practical sense
6) Homeworks are definitely very challenging, but I like how we got 2 weeks to
work on them
7) Midterm review was very helpful for me to understand what to expect
on the exam
8) In-class guest lectures were pretty interesting (plus it gave us a chance to
take a break from the hard-core studying)
- Spring 2011

- Fall 2010
- CS 166 Information Security
- Approachable.
- Not too approachable.
- Homework is very intellectually challenging.
- CS 265 Cryptography & Computer Security
- The lecture is very clean and efficient, the homework is well designed and relevant to the content of the lecture. The whole course is well designed.
- Due to the challenging assignments, CS-265 becomes the only
subject, other subjects get neglected.
- I really look forward to his classes. He makes the
class interesting with good examples.
- Too much homework!
- CS 266 Topics in Information Security
- Great class overall. I enjoyed my projects and presentations.

- CS 265 Cryptography & Computer Security
- Entertaining class!
- Very strong and in-depth experience. Clarity in teaching.
Good material presented in a very simple and clear way. Discusses the
background required before he goes to in depth material.
- Fall 2009
- CS 166 Information Security
- Awesome teacher, takes otherwise complicated subject
and makes it super simple. Great jokes! One of the few classes
I look forward to attending. Don't change a thing!
- I seldom have a professor who can teach material in
such a memorable and interesting way.
- Class is too short---make it 2 semesters.
