As you may be aware, the single Spring 1999 section of CS 152 was an experimental section in which the CS 145A prerequisite was not enforced, in which much of the material from CS 145A was covered, and which will be allowed to satisfy the CS 145A requirement for the BSCS. For Fall 1999, I do not feel that I can do this, since the special treatment of CS 152 was authorized only for a single semester. What I am willing to do is this: Students who want to enroll in CS 152 without the CS 145A prerequisite may enroll at their own risk, given that students with the CS 145A prerequisite get higher priority. This higher priority applies even to Open University students, and even to students who do not attend the first class. The risk is that unless such students do a significant amount of extra work, their course grade may suffer, since the treatment of material from 145A will be rather fast-paced for those who have not completed that course. Students who complete CS 152 in Fall 1999, without having completed CS 145A or an equivalent, are welcome to take the final exam in my CS 145A section. I will waive the CS 145A requirement for anyone who does so and receives a grade of C- or better on the exam -- just as if you had requested credit by examination. -- J. Smith
