The Java Plug-in
Note: web browsers (such as Netscape Navigator or MS Internet Explorer)
are not equipped to run Java 2 programs. To run Java 2 programs they
need a plug-in, which is basically a special tool or piece of software
that the browswer can get and plug-in in order to run special types
of programs, such as Java programs (or various video or audio files).
The Java Plug-in is discussed in Section 16.10 (pp. 803-804) in the text.
Below are fairly detailed instructions on how to get the plug-in
and install it on your own computer.
Getting and Installing the Java Plug-in
- First go to http://java.sun.com/products/plugin/
- Click on Java Plug-in 1.2.2 in the "Downloads" section (about half way
down the web page)
- In the section "Download the Java 2 Runtime Environment Version 1.2.2", select
"One large bundle", then click "Continue"
- Read the License Agreement and then click "Accept" (if you accept the agreement)
- Click the first "FTP download" button and wait for the download (depending on your modem,
this will take at least a couple of minutes and possibly several minutes)
- After the download is complete, a "Download successful" window should appear--
click on the "Install" button
- From this point on, just click "OK" or "Yes" or "Next" when appropriate--it's
best to accept the defaults for everything
- After all of that, you may have to restart your computer to get the plug-in
working (I think that part of the installation process that the computer takes
you through is to restart your computer at the end)
