To get an app on a phone for the purposes of debugging you first need to go to (in Safari -- must use Safari not another browser): https://developer.apple.com/devcenter/ios/index.action and log in user your developer account or your university program account.
Once logged in you should see a bunch of links on the right-hand-side that look like:
Click on the iOS Developer Portal link.

As a first step I need to invite you to join the SJSU iOS Developer team. I will circulate a sheet to get who is doing iPhone.
After I send an invite, you will get an invitation to join from Apple, you need to accept this, then you will get an account and you can login.
In the center of the screen you should see:
Click on this link. Make sure you attach an iPhone to your computer with the usual USB sync cable.
This link guides you step by step through the process of creating a certificate signing request, adding it to your keychain, and adding a provisioning profile to your phone.

Now to get an application actually on your iPhone, the Bundle Identifier in your project's Info.plist file has to match the AppId and organization you set in your certificate:
Before you compile and run your project, you should set the Active SDK in the upper left corner of the XCode window to a setting that has the word Device in it:
At this point when you compile and run, it should put the app on your phone.
One potential reason why this won't work is if your phone has a more recent OS than your SDK, in which case you should update your SDK. Jailbreaking your phone can also cause problems with this.

University Program

To set up a provisioning profile using the university profile some of the steps are done by you, some by me:

I need to: send you a team invitation
You need to: accept the invitation
You need to: send me a certificate signing request (CSR)
I need to: accept your CSR
You need to: send me a device id (DID).
I need to: Use your certificate, and DID to make:
(1) An AppID, (2) a Provisioning Profile
You need to: Download the provisioning profile
and start testing.

When you look at the AppID on the Apple Developer site, it might look like: 2ZA68DRGAD.edu.sjsu.SomeProject
You should set you Bundle Identifier in the plist to: edu.sjsu.SomeProject

Getting your app on an Android Phone for Debugging

A lot of information about developing on a test phone can be found at:
http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/device.html.
As I mentioned before, if you would like I do have some very old Android G1 phones available for testing.
The most recent version of Android the G1 Dev phones support is Android 1.6. There are some tricky ways to get them to install more recent version, but I won't discuss them in class.

In your AndroidManifest.xml file you can set the application tag to allow for debugging:

Next we need to sign the application.

Select your project, right-click (CTRL-click on a Mac), and select Android Tools > Export Signed Application Package.
Follow your way through the wizard, if you haven't created a keystore yet, you need to create one (can do as part of the wizard). You also might need to create a key if you don't have one.
When you compile and run, your project should go to your phone.

Auto-Rotations

One cool aspect of the iPhone is that when you rotate the phone it can detect this and display a suitable layout of the screen (Portrait or Landscape).
In the simulator, you can use command and the arrow keys to change the orientation. Or you can select how to rotate the orientation from the hardware menu.

Specifying Rotation Support

To begin we can create a new single-view application.
One of the things the summary tab for this application shows is the supported device orientations:

If you look at the View Controller for your project there should appear auto-magically the code:

This corresponds to what you have clicked.

This method is called by the system to find out if it's okay to rotate your app's window.
You should return YES for each supported orientation from among: UIInterfaceOrientationPortrait, UIInterfaceOrientationPortraitUpsideDown, UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeLeft, UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight.
If you want to support, all orientations then just return YES.

Making Auto-Rotated Things Look Right

To make the rotated view look correct we can open Interface Builder on the View Controller's xib file.
Select Tools > Size Inspector.
The top part controls the size and positioning of elements within the screen; the auto-sizing attributes control how the view is drawn when the window changes.
You will notice there are red arrows and I's in the square for auto-sizing.
Clicking on a UI element, and then clicking on the arrows will toggle the arrow from being solid to dashed. If it is solid then that margin/width/height attribute is considered strict; otherwise, it is considered flexible when the iPhone tries to render the screen the best it can.
Twiddling with the solid and red lines one can often make the screen look decent when rotated.
