Santa Cruz
We will depart at 10:00 for Henry Cowell
Redwoods. There you may go on a brief hike to see the giant redwoods. You may
also visit Roaring Camp. There will be
time to sit in the redwood grove and eat lunch (if you bring lunch).
The Boardwalk and Main
Beach
At 13:00 we will depart Henry Cowell,
possibly detouring through the UC Santa Cruz campus) for the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. This is a
century-old amusement park on the beach in Santa Cruz. If you want to go on some of the rides
(roller coaster, etc.) you can ask for a pass.
You can also walk along the river to Pacific Avenue in downtown Santa Cruz (shown in blue
on the map below). There are bookstores, cafes, and street musicians there. You
can also walk to the end of the wharf (shown in green) where there are many
gift shops and restaurants. Also, a colony of sea lions lives there.
You may also walk along West Cliff Road (shown in red below).
This is a beautiful walk that goes by Steamer
Lane (an important surf spot in the winter) and
ends at Natural Bridges Beach
(which would take about 45 minutes to reach by foot.)
If you decide to explore, be sure to be back at the bus for
our 16:00 departure time. If you miss the bus, you will have to catch the highway 17 express bus ($4) which
departs from the Metro Station on Pacific
Avenue in downtown Santa Cruz and will drop you off at the SJSU
library.)
