Furlough Days

In response to the California budget crisis, the CSU faculty volunteered to reduce their salary by 9.23% in order to avoid more damaging cuts to the CSU system. The salary reduction will take the form of unpaid furlough days in which faculty members are strictly forbidden to do CSU-related work. Naturally, this includes lecturing or meeting with students.

My furlough days will be:

Friday, August 28

Thursday, September 17

Tuesday, September 22

Thursday, October 15

Friday, November 13

Wednesday, November 25

Friday, Decmber 4

Wednesday, December 9

These furlough days will result in less material being covered in class. Some of this material may be critical in future classes that have this class as a prerequisite. Please read this open letter for more information on this outrageous situation and what you can do to save your educations.

Course Information

Catalog Description:

Emphasizes the important concepts, activities, and artifacts of the analysis phase of object-oriented software development. CASE tools and UML are used to model application domain date, workflows, system requirements, deployment, and life cycles. Prerequisite: CS 160 or instructor consent.

Instead of a required text, course materials (lecture notes, labs, etc.) will be posted at:

http://www.cs.sjsu.edu/faculty/pearce/modules/courses/f09/cs251/index.html

Materials

Students are expected to bring their laptops to class (they will be used about 50% of the time). The laptops should have the following software installed:

Eclipse IDE for Java Developers

Star UML (for Windows) or BOUML (for Linux)

Grading

Your grade will be based on a midterm (20%), a final (30%) and several assignments (50%). One assignment will be a team project.

The final exam is on Tuesday, December 14 from 9:45 – 12:00.

You will need your laptops for the midterm and final.

Late Work

Late work is only accepted by prior arrangement. In other words, if it doesn't look like you will be able to turn in an assignment on time, contact me before the assignment is due and tell me how close you are to finishing, how much more time you need, and why you can't get it turned in on time. If your reason is compelling enough, I may allow you to turn your assignment in late with or without a penalty. Otherwise, turn in what you have at the deadline. Work turned in late without prior approval will not be graded and will count as a 0 in the grade book.

Unoriginal Work

Submitting someone else's work without attribution or allowing someone to submit your work without attribution is considered cheating. If caught cheating, a complaint will be filed with the university and the course grade will be F. If you have doubts about what is and is not allowed, consult me before submitting your work.

Policy Information

Academic Integrity:

Your own commitment to learning, as evidenced by your enrollment at SJSU, and the University's Academic Integrity Policy requires you to be honest in all your academic course work. Faculty members are required to report all infractions to the Office of Student Conduct and Ethical Development. The policy on academic integrity can be found at http://sa.sjsu.edu/judicial_affairs/.

Campus policy in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act:

If you need course adaptations or accommodations because of a disability, or if you need special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please make an appointment with me as soon as possible, or see me during office hours. Presidential Directive 97-03 requires that students with disabilities requesting accommodations register with the SJSU Disability Resource Center to establish a record of their disability.

Please familiarize yourself with SJSU policies and procedures:
