DH450 Notes (from the CS Department Technicians)

First Log on:

The first time an account is used:

    o Select Common Desktop Environment (CDE) from the options/session and click 'OK'
    o Click world icon (leftmost icon on the Front Panel) to generate browser.

       - Click 'Accept' to accept the Netscape license agreement.
       - Under the 'Edit' menu click 'Preferences'.
             - click 'Navigator'.
             - change home page location to http://www.cs.sjsu.edu/faculty/froomin
             - click 'OK'.
       - Click 'Home' button to verify that the home page is Marty Froomin's web page.


OR


    o Select GNOME 2.0 environment from the options/session pop-up menu and click 'OK'.
    o Click Applications (leftmost icon on the tool bar), choose the CDE Menu at the button of that sub Menu.
    o Click 'Links', then choose Web Browser.

       - Click 'Accept' to accept the Netscape license agreement.
       - Under the 'Edit' menu click 'Preferences'.
             - click 'Navigator'.
             - change home page location to http://www.cs.sjsu.edu/faculty/froomin
             - click 'OK'.
       - Click 'Home' button to verify that the home page is Marty Froomin's web page.

Subsequent Log ons:
   
    o Before entering login and password
        o Click 'Options' -> 'Session' and select the session environment
    o Now login



StarOffice 7 is available in DH450

How to set it up?

    Under CDE:

          o Login as user
          o Run /usr/local/staroffice7/program/setup and follow the setup instructions
          o Click the StarOffice icon (leftmost icon on the Front Panel) then choose which application you want from there.

    Under GNOME:
       o Login as user
       o Click 'Applications -> Office'



New Software is available in DH450

JDK 5 (Java 5):
    Java 5 is under /opt/jdk1.5.0/bin. This path needs to be added to your PATH environment before /bin. Otherwise you will be using Java 4 located in /bin.

BlueJ:
    The executable 'bluej' is under /opt/bluej directory on all of the Sun workstations.
