Mathematics and Computer Science PPP Dial-in service
The Mathematics and Computer Science Department runs two semi-supported
PPP dial-in servers for remote network access. One server is for
faculty/staff use, only, the other is for student use. These dial-in
servers are for PPP use; terminal style sessions are not allowed.
Number of lines: 6 (faculty/staff), 12 (student)
Phone Numbers: (408)924-5179 [student], faculty number available by request
Modem type: 28.8 Kb, V.34 (POTS service)
Authentication: Standard UNIX login
Hints for configuring your PPP Client Software
- Do not set an IP address for your computer. Our server will do that for you.
- Do not set a netmask, DNS server, WINS server or DNS
domain name. Our server will communicate the correct settings to your
PPP software.
- Turn on header compression (Van Jacobson or VJ Compression)
- You may get better performance if you enable software compression.
You will need to experiment to find the best setting for your
combination of hardware and software.
- Always use hardware flow control; never use software flow control.
- Our dial-in servers accept only standard UNIX plain text authentication, so you need to turn on "Pop up a terminal window after dialing" or "Show
terminal window" in your dialing software. The login can be scripted if you
wish. However, we strongly recommend against storing your password in
a script. You should enter your password each time.
When connecting to our dial-in server, you will see a terminal window
with a UNIX login prompt. Enter your UNIX username and password there
and click the done button. The PPP connection will then automatically start.
Policies for the use of this service
- This service is provided but not supported. This means that
we do not have staff available to assist you in setting
up and debugging your software, computer, or
modem. Please don't call the department or
the technical staff if you have problems with your PPP
setup. Work with your friends
and colleagues to determine the source of your problem. Students may make
a report to the lab monitors (MH226) for suspected server problems. Faculty
may follow appropriate faculty problem reporting procedures for suspected
server problems.
- Only accounts issued by the Department of Mathematics and Computer
Science are valid on the dialin servers.
- Only PPP sessions are supported (no ANSI terminal sessions)
- Sessions will be automatically disconnected after 30 minutes of
idle time. We reserve the right to disconnect sessions active for
more than two hours during peak use times without warning.
