Open Lab User Guide


IMPORTANT information about your account:

All undergraduate computer accounts are programmatically generated at the beginning of each semester. Undergraduate accounts are programmatically deleted at the end of the semester after the last University-sanctioned final. You must save your files to floppy or to your personal computer before the end of finals if you wish to save your work permanently.

A. Login to Win2K Pro

1. If you don't see a logon screen, press 'Ctrl-Alt-Delete' keys.

2. In the 'Domain' field, select 'MATHCS'.

3. In the 'User Name' field and 'Password' field, type in your account name and password, which are shown on your printout.

4. Once you logon to NT, you should see 'Start' button on your lower left corner of your desktop.

5. To change your password, press 'Ctrl-Alt-Delete' keys. A screen containing 'Change Password' button will show up for you to change password.

  

B. Running Applications

From 'MATHCS' menu:

Click on the 'Start' button at the lower left corner of your desktop, select 'DEPT MATHCS' menu, and then select the program you want to run.

'DEPT MATHCS' menu contains following programs:

	Dbase IV
	Maple 5
	Masm
	Matlab 4.2c1
	Scheme 7.4.2
	Turbo C++

From 'Programs' menu: 

Click on the 'Start' button at the lower left corner of your desktop, select 'Programs' menu and then select the program you want to run.

'Programs' menu contains following programs:

NOTE:

To end task, press 'Ctrl-Alt-Delete' keys. A screen containing 'Task Manager' button will show up. Click on it and select the program that you want to end task.

 

C. Reading email on UNIX system  

1. Click on the 'Start' button at the lower left corner of your desktop; select 'Programs' and 'Tera Term Pro' then 'Tera Term SSH'.

2. In 'Host Name' field, select 'mcs01.mathcs.sjsu.edu' or 'mcs02.mathcs.sjsu.edu' or 'mcs03.mathcs.sjsu.edu' or 'mcs04.mathcs.sjsu.edu' or 'mcs05.mathcs.sjsu.edu' or 'mcs06.mathcs.sjsu.edu' .

3. Login prompt should come up.

4. Type in your account name and password.

5. Type in 'pine' to access your mail reader.

 

D. Web Browser

1. You can find Netscape 6 and Internet Explorer in 'Programs' menu.

 

E. Saving files

1. Click on the 'Start' button at the lower left corner of your desktop; select 'Programs' and 'Windows NT Explorer'.

2. Click on 'home on alpha (J:)'.

3. Save files to your destination directory (home directory J:\ drive or floppy disk A:\ drive).

Your PC J: drive corresponds directly to your UNIX home directory. If you wish to send files to your CS account directory from the Internet, you may use SCP or FTP to transfer them. Simply FTP or SCP to mcs01.mathcs.sjsu.edu, and proceed as normal.

NOTE:

Do not try to save files on the C:\ drive. You do not have permission to copy files to the hard drive, except to the \TEMP directory. Either save your files on your home directory or on your floppy disk.

 

F. Accessing your instructor's handouts

From Windows NT

1. Click on the 'Start' button at the lower left corner of your desktop; select 'Programs' and 'Windows NT Explorer'.

2. Click on 'handouts on eniac (K:)'.

3. Select the instructor's handouts by clicking on his/her folder. 

From Unix (mcs01 - mcs06)

1. cd /handouts

 

G. Printing

1. Click on the 'Start' button at the lower left corner of your desktop; select 'Settings' then 'Printers'

2. Click on 'Add printer'.

3. Click on 'Network print server' then 'next'.

4. Double click on '\\sptr\' and choose the correct printer and click on 'OK'.

5. Click on 'Yes' for setup this printer as your default printer.

 

Printing Notes:

1. The first printer you add will be your default printer.

2. Each laser printout costs $0.15. Before printing, go to WSQ1 or Spartan shops, or Clark library to purchase a SPARTANCARD card from the purchase machine.

   

H. Ask for Help:

1. If you run into problems with your account, ask our lab monitor first. DO NOT go to MH208 and ask for help.

2. The lab monitor is NOT responsible for your homework or project.

3. If you forgot your password, go to mh325 between 10:00 and 11:00 AM Monday- Friday or ask the lab monitor to reset your password to your original one.

  

REMEMBER:
