Student Account Policies

CS Home Page : Computer Resource Center : Rules : Student Account Policies

Accounts on the CS Network (both UNIX and Windows) are available to all students who either:

Details on both options are available through the Department office, MH 208. Do NOT send e-mail to 'webmaster' or go to the department Technical office to ask for an account. You will be turned away, politely, and referred to the Department Office.

Accounts are for the express purpose of supporting instruction in Computer Science. To this end, there are no facilities appropriate for aiding in homework for courses in other departments. There are no spreadsheets or word processors int the CS labs, so do not sign up for a CS account with expectations that these programs will be available.

Accounts on the CS network remain active as long as all the following criteria are met:

As soon as a student's status on any of these criteria changes, their account is subject to immediate deactivation or deletion.

NOTICE: Accounts are valid from the time the account password is picked up through the last day of finals for that semester only. You must sign up for an account each term! Computer accounts will be deleted at the end of semester. Make sure you copy your files onto floppies or save your files to your personal or home computer via ftp or scp at the end of the semester.

Given the number of student accounts relative to staffing levels, it is impossible to meet certain requests. For example, 'vanity' account names or aliases cannot be created. All account creation and maintenance is done programatically, so all account names must fit the expected patterns. Additionally, when an account is deactivated, all files associated with that account are deleted. Be sure to retrieve all files BEFORE allowing your account to lapse. Finally, system level mail forwarding will not be supported at any time. If you know your account will lapse, inform all correspondents in advance of your change of e-mail address. Once an account is deleted, all mail for that person will be returned to sender.
