IMPORTANT information about your account:

All undergraduate computer accounts are programmatically generated at the beginning of each semester. Please check the CS Department Student Account Policies to find out when your account will be removed. You must save your files to a floppy or to your personal computer before the end of finals if you wish to save your work permanently.

 

A. Login to WinXP

A. Login to WinXP

1. If you don't see a logon screen, press 'Ctrl-Alt-Delete' keys.

2. In the 'Domain' field, select ‘SCIENCE’.

3. In the 'User Name' field and 'Password' field, type in your account name and password, which are shown on your printout.

4. Once you logon to WinXP, you should see 'Start' button on your lower left corner of your desktop.

5. To change your password, press 'Ctrl-Alt-Delete' keys. A screen containing 'Change Password' button will show up for you to change password.

  

B. Running Applications

From 'Programs' menu: 

Click on the 'Start' button at the lower left corner of your desktop, select 'Programs' menu and then select the program you want to run.

'Programs' menu contains following programs:

        Accessories
        BlueJ
        Computer Associates (Anti-Virus)
        Cygwin
        Cygwin X
        GSTools
        Hugs98
        Java Media Framework 2.1.1e

  Microsoft Develop Network

NOTE:

To end a task (i.e., terminate a program), press the 'Ctrl-Alt-Delete' keys. A screen containing a 'Task Manager' button will appear. Click on it and select the program that you want to terminate.

 

C. Reading email on UNIX systems  

1. Click on the 'Start' button at the lower left corner of your desktop; select 'Programs' and 'SSH Secure Shell', then 'Secure Shell Client'.

2. Press 'Enter'.

3. In 'Host Name' field, type in 'cs01.cs.sjsu.edu' or 'cs02.cs.sjsu.edu' or 'cs03.cs.sjsu.edu' or 'cs04.cs.sjsu.edu' or 'cs05.cs.sjsu.edu' or 'cs06.cs.sjsu.edu' or 'cs07.cs.sjsu.edu' or 'cs08.cs.sjsu.edu' or 'cs09.cs.sjsu.edu'; In 'User Name', type in your account name.

4. Press 'Connect'.

5. Type in your password at the prompt.

6. Type in 'pine' to access your mail reader.

 

D. Web Browser

1. You can find Mozilla Firefox, or Internet Explorer in the 'Programs' menu.

 

E. Saving files

1. Click on the 'Start' button at the lower left corner of your desktop; select 'Programs' and 'Accessories', then 'Windows Explorer'.

2. Click on 'home on alpha (J:\)'.

3. Save files to your destination directory (home directory J:\ drive or floppy disk A:\ drive).

Your PC's   J:\ drive corresponds directly to your UNIX home directory. If you wish to send files to your CS account directory from the Internet, you may use SCP or SFTP to transfer them. Simply SFTP or SCP to cs01.cs.sjsu.edu, and proceed as normal.

NOTE:

Do not try to save files on the C:\ drive. You do not have permission to copy files to the hard drive, except to the C:\TEMP directory. Save your files either in your home directory or on your floppy disk.

 

F. Accessing your instructor's handouts

From WinXP

1. Click on the 'Start' button at the lower left corner of your desktop; select 'Programs' and 'Accessories', then 'Windows Explorer'.

2. Click on 'handouts on eniac (K:)'.

3. Select the instructor's handouts by clicking on his/her folder. 

From Unix (cs01 - cs09)

1. cd /handouts

 

G. Printing

1. You can print to the default printer ‘B&W Printer’.

Printing Notes:

1. Each laser printout costs $0.16. Before printing, go to WSQ1, the Spartan Shop, or the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library to buy a print card or add value to your print card.

   

H. Ask for Help:

1. If you run into problems with your account, ask our lab monitor first. DO NOT go to MH208 and ask for help.

2. The lab monitor is NOT responsible for your homework or project.

3. If you forgot your password, go to WSQ1 and ask the lab monitor to reset your password.
