APPLICATION INSTALLATION MANUAL

For Windows XP Workstations

Notes:

  • Do all of the installations logged in as Local Administrator.
  • Use default installation unless specified with other method.
  • Reboot machine after each installation even if the software doesnit require so.
  • If you get a "Security Warning" when opening a file, choose "Run".

1.     Internet Explorer 7 w/ Patch

Note: IE is installed as part of the Windows OS.
You can update it to the latest version with "Windows Update."

Installation instruction:

o        Open Internet Explorer.

o        Click Tools –> Windows Update

o        Choose Custom.

o        Select all of the High–Priority updates, and it would have new version of IE as one of the updates.

o        Click Review and install updates, and then Install Updates to start the installation process.

o        During the process, you will need to Accept the license agreement for Internet Explorer.

It is recommend that you install all of the critical patches. For recommended patch, pick those for applications which are already installed on your system.

2.     Firefox 3.5.1

o        Download *.exe for windows.

o        Double click *.exe to install and follow the instructions as prompted.

3.     Microsoft Office Pro 2003

Note: If you are majored in Computer Science Department, you can get some of the Microsoft's software for free. Check the instruction at: http://csclub.cs.sjsu.edu/.

Required: You need to have Microsoft .NET installed prior to Office installation. To install .NET: go to Windows Update, and if it needs to be installed, it would appear under "Software Updates".

Installation instruction:

o        Run SETUPPRO.EXE from CD and follow the instructions as prompted until the screen for Type of Installation.

o        Choose Custom Install.

o        Uncheck: Outlook, Publisher. Check Choose advanced customization of applications and click Next.

o        On Advanced Customization page, make the following changes:

§         Database Replication: Run all from My Computer

§         Additional Wizards: Run all from My Computer

§         Sample Databases: Run all from My Computer

§         Microsoft Office Access Snapshot Viewer: Run all from My Computer


|- Microsoft Office Excel

§         Text To Speech: Not Available


|- Microsoft Office PowerPoint

§         Animation Sound Effects: Not Available


|- Office Shared Features

§         Converter and Filters: Run all from My Computer

§         Fonts: Run all from My Computer

§         Office Assistant: Not Available

§         Proofing Tools
  |- French: Not Available
  |- Spanish: Not Available


|- Office Tools

§         Equation Editor: Run all from My Computer

§         HTML Source Editing: Run all from My Computer

§         Microsoft Officer Binder Support: Not Available

§         Microsoft Query: Not Available

 

o        Click Next and then Install.

o        After the installation is done, apply Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3).

4.     JDK 6

Installation instruction:

o        Download Java SE Development Kit (JDK) for 32-bit/64-bit for Windows/Linux/Solaris SPARC and 32-bit for Solaris x86.

o        Install J2SDK x.x.x executable (*.exe) first by double clicking *.exe.

o        Follow the instructions as prompted, choose C:\program files\j2sdk_x.x.x_xx as the install folder.

o        If you downloaded the documentation, Extract the documents (*.zip) to C:\program files\<JDK folder>\docs.

o        Create shortcut for documentation in Start Menu:
    1. In Windows Explorer, go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
    2. File -> new -> shortcut
    3. Browse to "C:\Program Files\j2sdkx.x.x_xx\docs\index.html", and click Next
    4. Type in a Name, and click finish.

o        Add the executables to PATH:
    1. Right-click on My Computer -> Properties.
    2. Click Advanced tab and then click Environment Variables button.
    3. In System Variables window, Double-Click on variable Path.
    4. Insert C:\Program Files\j2sdkx.x.x_xx\bin; (change 'x' to appropriate numbers) at the beginning of the Variable value: box, and click OK.
    5. Add a new variable: classpath.
    6. Click on New button for System Variables window.
        Variable name: classpath
        Variable value: C:\Program Files\j2sdkx.x.x_xx\lib;

5.     Eclipse 3.4.1

Note: Click "Main Eclipse Download Site", choose the latest 2.1.x version from "Latest Release" list, download eclipse-SDK-2.1.x-win32.zip for Windows 98/ME/2000/XP.

Installation instrcuction:

o        Download Eclipse IDE for Java Developers for Windows.

o        Extract the *.zip to c:\program files\Eclipse

o        Create shortcut for "Eclipse" in Start Menu:
    1. In Windows Explorer, go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
    2. File -> new -> shortcut
    3. Browse to C:\Program Files\Eclipse\eclipse.exe, and click Next
    4. Type in a Name, and click finish.
    4. Right-click on the shortcut and choose Property.
    4. Change value for Start to C:\temp

6.     Microsoft Visual Studio .Net 2008

Note: If you are majored in Computer Science Department, you can get some of the Microsoft's software for free. Check the instruction at: http://www.sjsucsclub.com/software/.

Installation instruction:

o        Run autorun.exe from the CD.

o        Follow the instructions as prompted until you reach Select Features To Install.

o        Choose Custom and click Next.

o        Leave Visual C# and Visual C++ as they are, and uncheck everything else.

o        Click Install.

o        After install, run autorun.exe from the CD

o        The select Install Product Documentation

o        Click Next and select I have read and agree click Next

o        Select Custom install

o        Select Knowledge Base

o        Select .NET Framework SDK inside .NET Development

o        Uncheck everything else.

o        Click Install

7.     Oracle 10g

Installation instruction:

o        Run setup.exe form CD

o        Follow the instructions as prompted until Select Installation Type.

o        Choose Runtime.

8.     Alice v2.0

o        Download Alice for PC .

o        Extract the *.zip to c:\program files\Alice

9.     DrJava

o        Download Window App.

o        Move .exe to c:\program files\DrJava

10. JUnit 4.6

o        Download JUnit *.zip

o        Extract the *.zip to c:\program files\JUnit

11. Violet 0.21.1

o        Download violetumleditor(Violet UML Editor).

o        Move the file to C:\program files\Violet

o        Rename the file to Violet.jar

o        Create shortcut for "Violet" in Start Menu:
    1. In Windows Explorer, go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
    2. File -> new -> shortcut
    3. Browse to C:\Program Files\Violet\Violet.jar, and click Next
    4. Type in a Name, and click finish.

12. Cygwin

Note: the installation should be executed from a writable location.

Installation instrcuction:

o        Download Setup.exe.

o        Follow the instructions as prompted until Choose Download Site(s).

o        From the list, select ftp://mirrors.kernel.org and click Next.

o        For Devel and X11, click once on Default to change it to Install.

o        Click Next to start the installation.

13. 7-zip 4.65

o        Download *.exe for 32-bit Windows.

o        Double click *.exe to install and follow the instructions as prompted.

14. Acrobat Reader 9

o        Download .exe by clicking on "Download" button.

o        In Firefox, it might ask to install a plug-in before starting the download. Don't install it. If the download does not starts, click on "click here to download." to download .exe

o        Double click *.exe to install, and follow the instructions as prompted.

15. BlueJ 2.5.1

o        Download *.exe for windows.

o        Double click *.exe to install and follow the instructions as prompted.

16. DrScheme204 4.2

o        Go to PLT Scheme Download Page, select Windows (95 and up) x86 and click Download button.

o        Double click *.exe to install and follow the instructions as prompted.

17. Flash Player (By Adobe) for Firefox

o        Download *.exe for windows.

o        Double click *.exe to install and follow the instructions as prompted.

18. Haskell - Hugs98 (Sep 2008)

o        Download *.exe for windows.

o        Double click *.exe to install and follow the instructions as prompted.

19. JMF 2.2.1

o        Go to JMF 2.1.1e Software and click on "Downloads"

o        Choose "Windows" as the platform, and check box for "I agree to the software agreement."

o        Download the required files.

o        Double click *.exe to install, and follow the instructions as prompted.

20. SML

o        Download *.msi for "Microsoft Windows."

o        Double click *.exe to install and follow the instructions as prompted.

21. SSH 3.2.9

o        Download *.exe for windows.

o        Double click *.exe to install and follow the instructions as prompted.

22. SWI-Prolog

Note: the setup file should be executed from the computer, and not from a network drive. Otherwise, might get an error.

o        Download SWI-Prolog/XPCE for Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista

o        Double click *.exe to install and follow the instructions as prompted.

23. TextPad 5.2.0

o        Download *.exe for preferred language.

o        Double click *.exe to install and follow the instructions as prompted.

24. Greenfoot 1.5.3

o        Download *.exe for windows.

o        Double click *.exe to install and follow the instructions as prompted.

25. Thunderbird 2.0.0.22

o        Download *.exe for windows.

o        Double click *.exe to install and follow the instructions as prompted.

26. CSIM

o        Copy the CSIM folder onto your program files and rename it as CSIM

o        Open up Visual Studio

o        Then go to File and Open Project

o        Then go to the C:\Program Files\CSIM\netC19\lib\deblib and open the Visual Studio Project titled deblib

o        Then go to Build and Build Solution

o        Then go to the C:\Program Files\CSIM\netC19\lib\relib and open the Visual Studio Project titled relib

o        Then go to Build and Build Solution

o        Then go to the C:\Program Files\CSIM\netCpp19\lib\deblib and open the Visual Studio Project titled deblib

o        Then go to Build and Build Solution

o        Then go to the C:\Program Files\CSIM\netCpp19\lib\relib and open the Visual Studio Project titled relib

o        Then go to Build and Build Solution

Special Feature

Press any of the following key on the keyboard: R(ed), Y(ellow), G(reen), B(blue), or P(urple). Then double-click any of the item to change its color to the color beginning with the pressed key.   To remove the color, hold down <Ctrl> key when double-clicking.
